Four talented alien musicians are kidnapped by a record producer who disguises them as humans and reprograms them to forget their true identities and play soulless corporate pop under the name The Crescendolls. A soccer match is displayed on the monitor; the Japanese and French teams are playing. The two collaborators, Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto, are French and Japanese respectively. This movie is magical, the soundtrack is amazing, you feel like you are in the air, like you are “aerodynamic”. The story may seem simple enough, basically a “digital love”; a story where the hero has to be “tougher, better, faster, stronger” to save the woman of his dreams and her band (the “Crescendolls”) from an evil record producer. Leiji Matsumoto’s animation is so beautiful; for example, “night vision”; the earthly city (probably inspired by Tokyo) is breathtaking. But the real “superheroes” of this movie are Daft Punk. These guys understood that good music can bring a “good life”, they know how to move us, they know how to tell “something about us”. Let them take you on this journey into space, just like the “voyager” shuttle or not, you find it “veridis quo”. It is a “short circuit” (only 68 minutes, the duration of the album “Discovery”), but in the end, when you find yourself “face to face” with yourself you can only feel like you want a little more, as if it could never have been “too long”.
