David Kaplan: Yeah
Misfit cousins reunite for a tour of Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a twist when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, the location is where Jesse Eisenberg’s real-life ancestors settled in the diaspora.. Benji Kaplan: We stay moving, we stay light, we stay agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor’s gonna come over, get tickets, we tell him we’re going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: Bathroom. Benji Kaplan: He gets to the back of the train, starts moving towards the front, looking for stragglers.
Benji Kaplan: Yeah
David Kaplan: I’m sorry, are we the stragglers? By the time he gets to the front, the train will be in the station and we’re free to go home. David Kaplan: That’s so stupid. Tickets are probably like twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: That’s the principle of the thing. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. This is our country.

David Kaplan: No, it’s not, it was our country. They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap… 12 Studies, Op. 25, No. 3 in F MajorWritten by Frederic ChopinPerformed by Tzvi Erez. I’ve always enjoyed watching Jesse Eisenberg perform. He usually brings a sly edginess and quick, smart dialogue to the roles he plays.
David is an advertising executive with a wife and child
Now he’s won the Waldo Salt Award for Best Screenplay at the Sundance Film Festival for the newly released A REAL PAIN. Eisenberg produced, wrote, and directed this “drama”; a study of the relationship between estranged cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin). Benji is a sensitive, emotionally aware person grieving the loss of his grandmother, who he was very close to. They go on a trip to Poland together, tagging along with a Jewish history tour group, which obviously brings up a variety of difficult feelings. This is a beautiful film with fully developed characters who actually evolve as it goes on. It’s clear that they’re both going through something, as is everyone in this. The script is beautifully paced, with a perfect blend of emotional beats and comedy.
That being said, I can’t overlook Eisenberg’s performance
This is actually Eisenberg’s second film that he’s written and directed, the first being WHEN YOU’RE DONE SAVING THE WORLD, which is now on my must-see list. As I watched SUCCESSION, I knew Kieran Culkin was amazing and he’s even better in this. In a way, it’s harder to play an underrated role, which he’s great at. The movie is about generational trauma, different types of pain, and the human condition. I hope they talk about REAL PAIN come awards season!
